Exceptional Family Member Program

The Navy’s Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) supports military families with special medical, developmental, or educational needs. Enrollment is mandatory for sponsors with qualifying family members and ensures families receive the services, resources, and assignment support they need throughout the sponsor’s career.

What EFMP Provides

EFMP offers comprehensive support, including identification of special needs, enrollment assistance, assignment coordination, and ongoing family support. The program helps ensure Sailors are assigned to locations where their family members can access required medical, educational, and community resources.

Who Qualifies

Family members may qualify if they have chronic medical, mental health, developmental, or educational conditions expected to last six months or longer. This may include the need for adaptive equipment, assistive technology, specialized services, or wheelchair accessibility.
