The Navy is opening the base to showcase one of the best surf spots in southern California.

This highly anticipated two day surf event is on you don't want to miss. Over 100 surfers are registered to compete this year. Surfers are divided between four divisions; Military, Open Men's, Open Women's, & Jr's. Surfing is not the only thing going on at the Point Mugu Surf Contest. We will have an assortment of vendors, family activities, & live music for all to enjoy. This year's event will include a lineup of food trucks you will not want to miss. With a variety of meal options available you're sure to enjoy your day at the beach. The confirmed food trucks include: Pizza Man Dan's / Mr. Softee / Love to Snack / Jamaica Me Crazee / Jimbos Funnel Cakes / Quesa Birria Tacos. Please remember to bring cash and cards with you as we do not have ATM's on the beach.
 

Guests may enter NBVC, Point Mugu via the Las Posas gate starting at 6:30 am. The gate will remain open to the public throughout the day. In the event we reach capacity the gate will be closed to in bound traffic. It is advised that you arrive early and to carpool.

From Los Angeles / Northbound Highway 101

  • Take the Las Posas Road exit and travel South 7 miles to Naval Base Ventura County.

From Ventura / Southbound Highway 101

  • Take the Las Posas Road exit and travel South 7 miles to Naval Base Ventura County.

From Santa Monica / Northbound Pacific Coast Highway 1

  • Take Pacific Coast Highway to the Las Posas Road exit.

Military personnel

MWR is now offering shuttle service for those stationed at NBVC Port Hueneme who don't want to drive or don't have transportation to Point Mugu. The shuttle will run both Saturday and Sunday. There will only be one pickup and drop-off time available per day. Pick up will be from the Duke's Parking lot with departure to Point Mugu at 9 am. The return shuttle will depart Point Mugu for Port Hueneme at 5:30 pm. Service is free and seats are first come-first serve. Space is available to transport items such as bags, strollers, chairs.

Surf Contest

The 2024 Point Mugu Surf Contest includes four divisions; Military, Open Men’s, Open Women’s, & Jr’s (17 & under). This year surfers in each division will compete to win cash prizes and some killer SWAG from our sponsors. First place in each division will win $500, second place will win $300, and third place will take home $200. Space is limited, there will not be a waiting list for this event. Surfers who register and fail to check in for their heat will not compete. Substitutions are not accepted. All proceeds benefit our Navy Quality of Life Programs here at Naval Base Ventura County.

Surf & Sack Tournament

Registration is NOW OPEN for the Point Mugu Surf Contest's Surf & Sack Tournament. Sign up your 2-person team today for a chance to win $500 and a new set of boards. The competition is limited to 32 teams and is open to the public to participate in. This one-day tournament is scheduled for Saturday, May 25 starting at 10:30 am. ACO rules apply. FAQ’s

Where do I enter?
All visitors will enter NBVC Point Mugu through the Las Posas Gate starting at 6:30 am. The gate will remain open to the public throughout the day. In the event we reach capacity the gate will be closed to in bound traffic. It is advised that you arrive early and to carpool.

When can I enter?
The Las Posas Gate will open at 6:30 am.

Is there a cost to attend?
No. the event is free to attend and parking is free

Who is allowed to come to the event?
Everyone. The event is open to the public. All guests 10 years and up are required to have a photo ID with them.

Where is the event location?
The event is located at Surfers Beach, NBVC Point Mugu.

What if it rains?
This event is rain or shine.

Will food and beverages be available?
Yes. Food and beverages will be available for sale. ATM’s may not be available so we ask the public
to bring cash and cards to purchase food and beverage items from our vendors.

Can I bring a camera with a large telephoto lens?
YES, cameras with telephoto lenses are allowed for the strict purpose of photographing surfers. Photographers may only photograph surfers in the water. Individuals pointing their cameras in other directions may be asked to leave and/or subject to review of your images.

Where can I park?
Parking will be located near the event site look for signage and follow the direction of Military Police and parking attendants. Carpooling is highly encouraged.

What can I bring with me?
Bottled water, cameras, small bags/purses, sunscreen, beach chairs, umbrellas, towels. All guests and their vehicles are subject to search upon entering NBVC and again at the main event entrance.

What items are prohibited?
Drugs including marijuana, weapons including knives, pets, coolers of any size, & drones. Other restrictions may apply.

Do I need to have my ID with me?
YES, guests 10 years and up should be prepared to show a valid ID if asked to do so by Military Police.

How can I watch the surf contest?
Viewing locations include the beach (during low tide) and the breakwater rocks. A folded up beach towel makes a great cushion for siting on the rocks. This event is not streamed over the internet.
